A Successful Charity Business Brunch
We were thrilled to host another successful charity Business Brunch last Friday. We welcomed new and familiar faces from the local business community to join us for an event filled with great food, inspiring talks, and networking.
The day started with brunch from Kings Fine Cooked Meats and hot drinks courtesy of rijo42.
Reflecting on Summer's Achievements
Our CEO, Anthony Ashworth-Steen, opened the morning by sharing the highlights of our work over the summer. He spoke about the success of our partnership with UFC for the UFC x OnSide Mentoring programme. The programme has given young people the chance to get involved in sport and develop life skills. He also talked about the impact of our employability programme in Leigh. Over the last 2 years it has supported 344 young people in gaining the skills and confidence they need to take their first steps into the working world. With 137 of those young people gaining apprenticeships/employment and 62 entering education/training.
Reflecting on the impact Wigan Youth Zone has on the community, Anthony said,
“WYZ is making a tangible difference to the community - both in terms of enriching the lives of young people in our community and generating social value for the community”
Wigan Council CEO Shares Her Vision
We were honoured to have Alison McKenzie-Folan OBE, CEO of Wigan Council, as our guest speaker. Alison shared her thoughts on the future of Wigan and Leigh, highlighting key areas such as public services, arts, and culture. She emphasised the importance of ensuring young people’s voices are heard and their role in shaping the future of the borough.
Alison McKenzie-Folan OBE spoke about how crucial to the community it is that we listen to young people,
“The voice of young people is really important, so places like Wigan Youth Zone are so important to us because they touch the lives of so many children and we can pick up feedback from that. We can listen to the young people that come here and the charities and places like Wigan Youth Zone that work with our children in such a dedicated way.”
Welcoming New Patrons and Supporters
A key moment of the event was welcoming our new Gold Patrons, GHE Electrical, Fire and Security. We’re incredibly grateful for their support, which will enable us to continue providing vital services to young people in the area. Additionally, we were presented with a generous donation from The Heaton Group, raised through their Cotton Works Charity Golf Day. This contribution will go directly towards supporting the programmes we run for young people, making a real difference in their lives.
A Special Thank You
The event was made possible with sponsorship from Express IT, whose ongoing support has been invaluable to our work.
