Tell us about how your Wigan Youth Zone journey started?
Being part of the Youth Zone has made me more confident in being able to do what I want to do, or say what I think and not just following the crowd. It has helped me to believe in myself a bit more, that I do have good ideas and can make a positive difference and help people. I would like to go on to be able to have a positive impact on more people, and keep on growing in confidence!
My friend Jess told me about Wigan Youth Zone, and even though she doesn’t come anymore, I still love to go. I came to the Youth Zone on the outreach as we had nothing else to do and it was always a bit boring, and sounded more fun than sitting down in her house.
I live in Atherton, and I live with my mum, dad and brother. Home life is good, we go on lots of days out but when we are all together at home it can be a bit stressful, so I like to get out of the house.
When I first started at Youth Zone I was quite shy, and only stuck with the people that I knew and only did what they wanted to do, which was just sitting down, but I actually wanted to do things.
One of the first areas I went to was climbing, I felt like I had more independence as I was just used to going places with my mum and dad, not just with my friends, and my mum and dad were happy with me going as they knew it wasn’t the park to hang around.
After attending the Youth Zone for so long I feel more confident, because I can go and do things I want to do, even though other people I know don’t want to. If no one else wants to do it I’ll always be the first to have a try now. I sometimes struggle with getting really angry, and being at Youth Zone it gives me a space that I feel I can talk in, and it helps me to not be as angry.
I’m really happy when I’m at youth zone and even if stuff is going on in my home life it helps me to forget about it! I got an offer to join the Youth Forum, but at first I said no. I didn’t understand what was going on, and I didn’t want to put my name on something, and be recognised for things at the Youth Zone, I just wanted to be in the background. I thought it was like a school council and didn’t want to be considered a teacher’s pet by going. I’m really glad that I went through as it’s given me loads of opportunities, and allowed me to make even more friends.
Describe any challenges or obstacles you have overcome thanks to attending the Youth Forum, and how it has helped?
Being shy around new people, being worried about putting myself forward for things, and sometimes I everything can feel like it gets too much, and being part of the forum lets me focus on things, and makes me feel like I am in control of the project we’re working on, and this helps to think like this in the rest of my time. I like that it doesn’t feel strict. Being part of the Youth Zone, and just having a place to go, and do what you want to while being with your friends, makes me feel safe and it’s a bit of an escape from school, and keeps me happy.
What do you like about attending the Youth Forum?
I really like it because I know that there is someone there to always talk to, and a Youth Worker I can build a relationship with. I liked the opportunities that came our way, I was recently part of a UK Youth Awards steering group, which was to create an online awards ceremony that any young person from across the country can attend, and we were looking at the ways that we can get as many people as possible involved, one of the things you came up with for example was getting someone who can sign, so people that are deaf can feel involved. I enjoyed that we had full control and I was really proud that I was one of the people chosen to be part of that. Being part of the forum makes me feel like I can make a difference in how people look at the youth zone and how they feel when they come, and I’m proud of that!
