On Friday 7th June, we were extremely privileged to welcome Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, as the special guest speaker for our charity Business Brunch. It was attended by over 100 leaders representing over 60 businesses, making it our most successful business event to date. Dedicated to launching our new Organisational Strategy for 2024-7, the main event was a fantastic Q&A session with the mayor hosted by our Chair, Gary Speakman.
Mr Burnham spoke in depth about his childhood growing up in nearby Newton-Le-Willows, his first interest and entrance into politics, and the sweeping policies he has planned for his historic third term in office. He restated his passion for the success of Wigan Youth Zone and similar youth-supporting services across Greater Manchester. In his words, “the provision of somewhere for young people to be themselves and have their horizons opened is very important”. This was followed by a long-term commitment to have a youth zone in every borough of Greater Manchester, stating “Wigan Youth Zone is essential infrastructure. It’s not nice to have, it’s a must have.”
The insightful session was prefaced by fantastic speeches made by our CEO, Anthony Ashworth-Steen and our Head of Fundraising, Lynsey Heyes, about our new 3-year strategy and its core principle, the importance of youth work. This was followed by a moving launch video of our strategy, focused on letters written from young members to the youth workers they say changed, and even saved, their lives.
Our strategy is ambitious, seeking large increases in both youth zone attendance and annual income for the coming 3 years. However, we are confident that with continued shows of huge support offered by our community, we will succeed in all our goals.
