Music, Resilience, and Volunteering
Meet Melissa, a young and exceptionally talented musician who once dreamt of a career as a performer and music therapist. Her journey, however, took an unexpected turn when she faced the daunting challenge of serious health issues, requiring her to put her dreams on hold. Melissa now undergoes dialysis three times a week while awaiting a life-changing kidney transplant.
The diagnosis of her health condition had a profound impact on Melissa’s mental well-being. She battled depression, endured nightmarish episodes, grappled with insomnia, and even contemplated suicide. It was a difficult period, but Melissa’s spirit remained unbroken
Despite the hurdles she faced, Melissa found solace and purpose in volunteering at Wigan Youth Zone, all while pursuing her master’s degree in music therapy. Her dreams of a future in music therapy kept her motivated, and she channelled her passion for singing into making a difference.
In June, Melissa completed her volunteer training and officially joined the team of youth workers in the music department. This opportunity allowed her to gain valuable experience related to her future career aspirations in music therapy.
Melissa dedicated herself to working with the Zone’s junior members, sharing her love for music and singing. She started by supporting the team in the music room and the radio booth, and gradually transitioned to providing one-on-one vocal coaching to young people.
