Pathway 2 Employment: A Year of Empowering Young People
It’s been an exciting journey for Pathway 2 Employment (P2E) as we approach the end of our first year of operation. We are thrilled to share that our commitment to empowering young people has paid off, and we’ve secured funding to continue our mission into 2024. As we reflect on our achievements, it’s evident that we’ve significantly impacted the lives of many young people in Wigan and Leigh.
A Year of Success
In our first year of Pathway to Employment (P2E), we set ambitious targets to support young people on their journey to positive destinations. These targets included:
- 115 referrals
- 35 placements into employment or apprenticeships
- 11 into training or education
- 11 into volunteering or work experience.
As we stand here today, we proudly announce that we’ve exceeded our goals.
Employment and Apprenticeships
Education and Training
A remarkable 61 young people have successfully found employment or are completing apprenticeships in diverse fields such as Construction, Catering, and Customer Service. This demonstrates not only their determination but also their potential to thrive in various work environments.
Education is the key to unlocking a brighter future, and we’ve been able to support 38 young people on their educational journeys. Seven of them are set to start their university or college adventures in September 2023, embarking on exciting new chapters in their lives. Additionally, 17 young people have achieved Level 1 & Level 2 qualifications in essential areas like Money Management, Warehouse & Storage, Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Maths & English, and Understanding Autism. We’ve also seen 14 young people complete specialized training, ranging from CSCS Training to Content Marketing & Branding Skills Bootcamp.
Volunteering and Work Experience
Collaboration with Employers
17 young people are actively participating in volunteering and work experience placements across a spectrum of roles, including Retail, Manual Labor, Horticulture, Hospitality, Marketing, ICT, and Customer Service. These experiences not only provide valuable skills but also instil a sense of responsibility and community engagement.
Our partnership with local employers has played a pivotal role in helping young people secure employment. Some of the esteemed organisations we’ve collaborated with include EE, Wetherspoons, British Airways, KFC, DPD, McDonald’s, ACS Thermal Engineering, and many more. These collaborations have enabled our youth to gain firsthand experience in various industries, fostering their personal and professional growth.
Tailored Support and Personal Development
One of the keys to our success is our ability to tailor our support to the unique needs of each young person. We understand that everyone’s journey is different, and we are committed to providing the right level of support to set them up for success. Our approach includes attending Recruitment Events & Jobs Fairs, College open days, completing University applications & Student Finance applications, site visits, informal introduction meetings, and Q&A sessions.
In addition to group sessions aimed at enhancing employability skills, we’ve provided one-on-one sessions for those who may not be ready for group settings. These sessions include Interview Skills & Mock Interviews, Application Forms & Cover Letters, CV Building, Job Search Skills, and Target Setting.
A Transformational Story: Meet Reina
One young person, Reina, exemplifies the transformative impact of our program. Initially lacking confidence, Reina joined us for one-on-one sessions to work on self-esteem, communication, and employability skills. Over time, Reina’s confidence grew, and they eventually joined our group sessions. In a courageous move, Reina came out as transgender and transitioned to female. With our support, Reina successfully completed group sessions and a 4-week work placement, leading to employment as an actor at Farmageddon. Furthermore, Reina is set to begin studying Computer Science at Edge Hill University in September 2023. Reina’s story is a testament to the power of personal development and the unwavering support P2E provides.
Addressing Post-Pandemic Challenges
Promoting Inclusivity & Accessibility
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to impact young people, with an increase in social anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor mental health. Our services play a vital role in offering comprehensive support to help them overcome these barriers. By boosting confidence and self-esteem, we empower our youth to recognise their skills and build a promising future.
P2E is committed to inclusivity and accessibility. We welcome young people of all genders, and our program accommodates those with additional needs and mental health concerns, including Autism, ADHD, BPD, Global Learning Delay, Schizophrenia, ODD, and Depression. Our goal is to ensure that every young person receives the support they need to identify suitable pathways to success.
