In a world often divided by borders and differences, art has a remarkable ability to connect people across cultures and continents. Recently, a group of our young people embarked on an artistic journey that not only celebrates the twinning of Wigan with Angers, France, but also highlights the power of collaboration and creativity in building bridges between communities.
On the 13th of April, a vibrant mural was unveiled. Created over the course of a fun-filled week, through a close collaboration between 12 members (Amani, Daisy, Dylan, Evie, Flynn, George, Jacob, Nathalie, Poppy, Sam, Victoria and Zoe), youth workers Catherine and Jas, and the visionary French art duo, Dupin & Duclos, the mural serves as a symbol of unity and friendship between two cities separated by miles but joined by shared aspirations.
Dupin & Duclos, known for their innovative approach to urban landscapes and imaginative realms, brought their distinctive artistic flair to Wigan. Their work, void of human or animal presence, invites viewers to enter a world where they become the storytellers, weaving narratives amidst the colours and shapes. The collaborative masterpiece embodies the dreams and aspirations of young people aged 8 to 18, forming a whimsical village where imagination knows no bounds.
The unveiling was also an opportunity for the community to engage with Dupin & Duclos in a captivating discussion. The dynamic duo shared insights into their creative process, offering glimpses into how they dismantle barriers between art and the public, while nurturing creativity in unconventional spaces.
“I feel privileged that the Youth Zone was asked to be part of such an exciting opportunity. Both young people and staff had the best week at the Youth Zone working alongside Dupin & Duclos. We had 12 young people working on the project, after a week of working together new friendships have been formed, they are all so proud of the Art work they have created. We wholeheartedly thank everyone involved for making this happen. We really hope that our relationship with Angers continues to grow.”
Catherine Bryan, Head of Arts
Our young people had an incredible week seeing this wonderful project from start to finish. They put hours of work into planning and painting and then got to see their work unveiled alongside their loved ones, and their mural will be seen by thousands of current and future youth zone members!
“George will remember this experience forever! The end result is stunning, I am so grateful to everyone involved for letting him be part of it!”
Ann Davies - Parent of young person, George
A huge well done to all the young people that took part, and a big thank you to Duplin & Duclos and Wigan Council, projects like the Wigan-Angers Mural remind us of the beauty that emerges when we come together!
