Volunteers Week is an annual celebration to highlight the incredible work that volunteers put in throughout the UK.
From 1st June to 7th June, we focused on the fantastic contributions our volunteers make to our centre each and every day. Whether it’s providing a listening ear for our young people or helping to ensure our members are engaged in our sessions, our volunteers are an incredible part of our team whose work does not go unnoticed.
At Wigan Youth Zone, we are extremely passionate about engaging with our local community and providing as many opportunities as possible. We are actively recruiting volunteers to work in each of our areas. As well as to get hands-on experience in our sessions, our volunteers have access to training and upskilling opportunities which can help to open up future positions and career paths.

I have been a volunteer here at Wigan youth zone for coming up 9 years and thoroughly enjoy every second of it. I have had various roles over that time with the juniors and am now part of the wall climbing team. We have a great time and those youngsters with inhibitions about heights soon lose them and learn good social skills to boot.

If I’m honest I was very nervous when I started and the support of yourself, the staff and all the young people in the youth zone it has greatly improved my professional/personal skills so I thank everyone in the youth zone for that. I am generally shy as an individual but I just enjoy coming out of my comfort zone and doing volunteer work as it reflects the potential I can reach you know as I feel more motivated to reach my goal in a future career. I would love to carry on volunteering after my placement hours if that is possible with you please as I enjoy helping out the team/getting to know them as well. Finally, I enjoy getting to know/having conversations with not only the young people but also help out them with their own problems they may face. Thank you.

“Our volunteers really are the unsung heroes. During what has been an exceptionally difficult couple of years, people from all walks of life around the Wigan Borough have taken the time to volunteer and make a huge difference to the young people of Wigan and Leigh. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them, and they go above and beyond for both our members and staff. We are incredibly grateful for what our army of volunteers has enabled us to do as a service inspiring the next generation of Wiganers. I am ecstatic we can celebrate them.”
Our volunteers are a credit to our charity and help us to open doors for young people across the Wigan and Leigh borough. Without their hard work and dedication, we would not be able to provide our invaluable services 7 days a week.
