Nurturing Potential and Making a Difference
At Wigan Youth Zone, young people are not just participants; they are also leaders and volunteers, actively contributing to their community and making a positive difference. Our Young Leaders programme welcomes young people between the ages of 14 and 17, offering an exciting opportunity to gain valuable skills, make lasting connections, and create meaningful impact.
Becoming a Young Leader at Wigan Youth Zone is an adventure filled with personal and professional growth. Participants delve into various aspects of development, including communication, organisation, leadership, and teamwork, fostering confidence and camaraderie along the way. Young Leaders play a pivotal role in supporting our Junior and Holiday Clubs, engaging with children aged 8 to 11 years old, and creating a nurturing environment for everyone involved.
For those seeking additional challenges and recognition, the Young Leaders program provides an opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. With a focus on personal growth, the programme encourages participants to engage in a diverse set of activities, including physical endeavours, skill development, volunteering (which can be fulfilled through their Young Leader role), and residential experiences.
The benefits of being a part of the Young Leaders program are multifaceted, from forming new friendships to seizing valuable training opportunities. Young Leaders have the chance to develop essential skills and bolster their confidence through our comprehensive training and development programs. Furthermore, the experience serves as a valuable addition to their CV, opening doors to diverse opportunities and laying the groundwork for their future endeavours.

“Some of the things I really enjoy about being a young leader are it is great knowing you are making a difference in the community; I have made many new friends who are other young leaders and have learnt many new skills and picked up many new hobbies. A few challenging aspects of being a young leader dealing with some of the challenging young people, but in the end, it is a lesson learnt for next time. Another is that some of the young people may think I am their friend, but I need to make sure they know I am merely someone who wants to make sure they are safe and having fun. My favourite activities when volunteering are helping in the rec, football, and whatever is on in the sports hall. The rec is very relaxed, and everyone is always doing something, I know most of the young people who like to stay there, and I like to go there after a busy day. The football pitches are always amazing; everyone is being respectful of one another, and once again, I know most of the young people who go there. Finally, the sports hall is a great place to go whether there is basketball, football, badminton, dodgeball or hockey. There are always new faces there, and it is a pleasure to go in there for 30 minutes. What I hope to achieve by being a young leader is getting my bronze award for DofE, making new friends, learning new skills, and picking up new hobbies. I hope to really make a difference in these young people's lives. I wish to spark something in them, to make them go on and achieve great things in life, and I know they will.”
